Managing the speed of traffic is a challenge for all roadway agencies, from local streets to major highways. Determining the most appropriate target speed for any section of roadway is a complex process that attempts to balance the mobility and safety of all users, supports the adjacent land use context, and advances community goals. Even more challenging is the process of designing and then operating roadways that will achieve those target speeds. This live virtual program will overview the state of the practice in speed management treatments and techniques, describe the nation’s Safe System Approach (SSA) to reducing crashes and crash severity, address how Bellevue, Washington is implementing speed management in their neighborhoods and on major roadways, and offer guidance highlighting current applications, innovations, and practical strategies for speed management and safe system implementation.

Learning Objectives

After attending this session participants will be better able to:

  2. Identify current speed management treatments and operational techniques used and describe situations in which they are most effective.
